Prey by Michael Crichton - A Book Review
“They didn't understand what they were doing.
I'm afraid that will be on the tombstone of the human race.”
Introduction:
GENRE: Science Fiction
AUTHOR: Michael Crichton
PAGES: 507
YEAR OF PUBLISH: 2002
For those of you who are not very familiar with the genre and are wondering from where have you heard the name of Crichton, I have only two words for you which are enough to introduce and give you a fair amount of idea who this brilliant writer is - 'JURASSIC PARK'! Yeah, that's right! That great Spielberg movie which created such a sensation and sprang to be on the favourite list of people of all ages, came out from the pen of Michael Crichton in 1983. The readers may be surprised to know that this book was considered to be made into a movie but apparently the story - it's concept was so frightening at the time that they feared it can induce mass panic and protests. (Personally, when I read this book a few years back it swept away the ground beneath my feet - it instantly sucked me in with it's brilliant storyline and impeccable & quite simple-to-understand writing of Crichton)
But it does not mean that Jurassic Park, as awesome as it is to read, in any way overshadows Prey. Prey has a life of it's own. It is also one of the best books of Michael Crichton up there with Jurassic Park, Congo, The Andromeda Strain, etc. The book contains one of the most interesting themes for a science fiction enthusiast - Nanotechnology. Of course, since this book was released, there have been miles and miles of advancement in this field, but the way Crichton weaves the story surpasses the belief that it will be 'backward' compared to today's advancements. Hence it might not be wrong to say that his vision was far beyond his years. Unlike hard sci-fi authors like Greg Egan or Stephen Baxter Crichton aimed his science writing at the layman and this is probably the secret of his huge commercial success. 13 of his books have been adapted into movies.
Summary:
So let's get back to Prey. The protagonist of our story, Jack Foreman is a house maker who was shown the door by the organisation he faithfully worked for called 'Media Tronics' when he discovered an internal scandal involving the owner of the organisation itself. He is an experienced professional whose work was to manage and build computer programs which were based upon the behaviour of animals in nature. This was in context to the development of nanoparticles and robotics. Jack had a large experience building AI programs based upon the behaviour of animals in the animal kingdom, in particular, the predators in the animal kingdom. This was because the predators are driven towards achieving their goal i.e., hunting, and could change tact according to different circumstances.
Jack lived with his wife and 3 children in a suburban home. His wife was employed in a company called Xymos, was working on a 'hush-hush' type Pentagon project and was frequent to a classified facility in the middle of Nevada desert. She was often late and sometimes did not return home at all. She became aloof, short-tempered and took little or too much interest in her children's lives. Her behaviour was becoming erratic from her usual self for Jack. It was then he started suspecting that Julia might be having an affair, only if he had known at that time that the truth was more daunting and scary. Jack consulted a friend of his who's a lawyer and with his advice he started being on a lookout to gather any solid proof to confirm his wife's affair. So far, he was not successful. Meanwhile strange things starts happening in his house. An mp3 player suddenly malfunctions, one of the kids, Amanda, develops inexplicable illness which clears up equally inexplicably as soon as the doctors put her under an MRI scanner. Julia doesn’t help—she’s hardly ever home now; Jack sees her driving back to work on the day of one of his kid's birthday in her car which showed a silhouette of a man sitting with her who was not there in the car before. Now, he’s convinced she’s seeing someone else. His wife's behaviour was becoming more erratic but so far there was no sign of any affair. It was then that his wife dropped the bomb on him.
One night Julia returns late at night and asks Jack to watch a recorded video. He agrees. The video shows his wife making a presentation with a man lying down on a stretcher. She goes on to explain in the video that Xymos has created micro cameras which behaves as a swarm and can penetrate the tiny blood vessels in the heart of a human body which opens up many possibilities in the medical field. But towards the end of the book it is found that the US Military has taken over the project and is trying to weaponize it by researching it in a desolate facility located in Nevada where Julia spends most of her time.
Fast forward, Jack runs into one of his former colleague who invites him back and that is when Jack gets to know that he is indirectly involved in this success too. His work in "distributed parallel processing or agent-based programs" is being used and Xymos is working with Jack's former company and is using Jack's old team on the site as Xymos is using some of that programming to get the nano-things to work together. Jack heads out to Nevada, where he learns that some of the micro-machines have apparently escaped from the facility and they've started acting on their own. And they're out of control. These machines seems to be adapting and learning as time passes on and to make matters worse, they are multiplying! They have solar panels to work using solar energy so there is no way to turn them off manually and they are not responding to any of the programming commands. They can form swarms and made by using the Prey program - they are hunting! Crichton terrifies the reader who is a fan of science fiction, especially the one who has a decent knowledge about science, by another of his idea about how these micro-machines are multiplying which. It's by producing them using the biological process of multiplication of bacteria - E-Coli in various chambers of the tanks and stabilizing them.
Towards the end, it turns out that Julia is completely infected and the swarm has completely taken over her. She goes on to infect all the others in the facility but Jack catches her and fights back. He finally figures out how to become immune by swallowing a virus which attacks the bacteria through which the machines were being produced. Jack escapes the facility through the backup helicopter that arrives leaving Julia and others infected in the facility as the plant overheats and explodes due to methane built up because Jack had disabled the vents. Jack flies away knowing fully well that Julia was the one responsible for everything that happened. He gives a dose of the virus to the children to protect and kill any traces of the machines that might be remaining.
Conclusion:
The novel terrified a lot of readers. It is gripping, thriller and laced with the signature Crichton stupefyingly brilliant story making through the most weirdest of theories that just might point in the right direction in actual research. Rumor has it that this novel infuriated many citizens in the U.S. who even protested against any research and development that was being done in the field of AI and nano-tech, making Crichton extremely famous once again establishing him as a novelist in Sci-fi genre whom we are not likely to forget for a long long time. We will go back and keep reading his works, partly for the mad, brilliant ideas and partly because of the thrill packed in them through his characters.

The Cloud's Flight
‘Pittar-pattar’ the rain drops fall,
From the clouds, its journey small,
towards the earth, smelling fresh.
It falls on the moor beyond that lifeless stream
where darker shadows loom in moonlight beams.
The drops form the pond,
Smaller, bigger; growing in bond
Falling in pit with each other,
Unity’s armour they donned.
Dark clouds gather above, they grow in size,
After joining one another, in lows and highs.
The earth was still before,
A crater in place,
Laying in the summer heat,
Barren, a hopeless space.
The clouds roamed above,
Proud and dark,
When nature taught it, a lesson stark.
Hidden inside is perspiration so wet,
It can wash away the troubles
of that forlorn pit and bless.
The cloud gurgles, it booms above,
The rain falls down, towards the ground,
So fast they fall, as if in love.
They bind together and form that stream,
That quenches the thirst, Of everyone in need.
And that pond too, which is formed,
Gave life to the earth, after that storm.
The clouds may grumble,
But none pay heed,
For it is also smiling and bright,
Not desolate or dark indeed.
It soars now quickly, boundless in the sky,
Watching the earth below Flourish,
a small heaven on the nigh’.
Heading towards another it gathers inside the life,
Some other place so desolate, so full of strife.
To end that pain it travels to another land,
Regardless of the boundaries created by man.

The Porn Market
Since the rise of the internet in the early 2000's, India has climbed onto the top of the list as the country having the 3rd largest consumption of Porn in the 2020, gaining rank as opposed to last year when it was the 4th largest consumer of porn (Source). It was no doubt that the consumption of porn used to be there a decade before this but different from the American market where this held a good part of market, the material was quite different and more local such as magazines and novels. The social structure allowed it to gain a good market share in that area attributing to the frowned upon social stance of people in this matter in India.
Viewership of Pornography in India:
Still, the industry was much more advanced in the U.S. The consumption of Porn was higher, more open, with a wide variety of stuff available to the general public. There were dedicated video stores which contained the Video Casettes, then CDs and then DVDs of various porn houses. U.S. is still the largest consumer of online porn followed by the United Kingdom followed by India. The funny thing about this is that India is the 3rd largest consumer of online porn which are created in the U.S. and elsewhere other than India where India has a significant lack of any major porn industry established within its boundaries. The content viewed online which contains people from India are either self recorded videos or Indian women working in the U.S. porn industry.
The online platforms having the largest viewerships in India are companies like PornHub.com and XVideos.com. Surprisingly, the most searched term on these online platforms in India, despite the heavy viewership of American porn, is 'Indian'.

Women viewership for Porn:
Every guy at some point, mostly in his teenage years, have wondered what does women think about Porn. Due to the mentality of social stigma associated with this, especially in the Developing countries, women are often considered to be superior beings (believe me, the stigma originates more from the deep seeded belief that women are superior and sacred and much less from the mentality of oppressing them, at least in the educated world). However with time, as the world became more connected to each other and influence of the western culture, this stigma has significantly reduced compared to the last 30-40 years of time. So does women like to watch porn? Here are some statistics for that:
India enjoys a viewership of a staggering 30% women of the total consumers, still the 3rd largest women consumer base preceded by Philippines and Brazil with 35% women consumers of the total consumers.
This statistics is true even for the year 2020. According to a survey done by xhamster.com, another well known porn website, and the article published by forbes magazine says that about 30% of porn viewers are women. This shatters the earlier belief that most people who watch porn are lonely men. The survey also reveals that the people watching porn are actually people having healthy sex lives, women among them taking a more cultural approach to porn.
To top it all off, the survey reveals that women actually spent money on porn (Yeah! I was surprised too.)!
To quote the article - "Both men (64.1%) and women (62.8%) overwhelmingly said they spent no money on porn last year but 11.9% of women said that they spent over $1000. That number is nearly double the amount of men who said they spent that kind of money on porn in the previous year. The average woman spending on porn dishes out about $129 a year, while men averaged around $66."
The article can be found here.
The Future of Porn:
So what is the future of Porn? With the current trend, it seems that the content and methods are only going to become more innovative because let's face it, we are never going to stop watching porn. Unsurprisingly, 1 in 5 mobile searches is that for pornography. So what if it comes in the form of VR (Virtual Reality)? Exciting, isn't it? The thought is such an imaginative boner for porn lovers (pun intended).
If we believe an article published by Covenanteyes.com, "It’s projected that virtual reality (VR) porn should be a $1 billion business by the year 2025. That’s third behind an expected $1.4 billion virtual reality video game market and $1.23 billion VR NFL-related content."
There is much development that is done in the field of manufacturing sex toys. According to an article published online by BBC, about 60-65% of women uses sex toys while in the U.S. about 50% of males at some point in time have used a sex toy. "The global market in 2017 is estimated to have amounted to a whopping £18 billion. "
But it's not just for women, there are a lot of strides being done in the field of creating sex robots for men. A company called Realbotix, developed a sex doll in 2017 called Harmony 3.0 which had self-lubricating vagina, an internal heating system and touch sensors to coax a reaction in the AI in movement and sound, a fully realistic experience. Starting from the design of first 'Harmony' by Matt McMullen, the founder of Abyss Creations, which and I quote " has a tiny waist, a generous bosom and is so lifelike she’ll even orgasm during intercourse."
Interestingly, "In addition, customers can dictate their partner’s character choosing between 18 personality traits including shy, sensual, jealous, moody or talkative. The doll can be programmed to recite poetry for those who prefer a literary type, or crack jokes for customers who love a comedian." (Source: Article published in TheSun online).
For those having fat wallets and are interested - can buy Harmony "across the globe for the princely sum of £11,700."
So all in all, Cheers! Hope this info has fascinated you!
So is Porn Good or Bad?
It is as the saying goes - "Excess of everything is bad". Overall, what is necessary is to lead a healthy physical, mental and sexual life. Watching porn 3-4 times a week is fine, the problem arises when a person gets addicted to it.
If we believe the statistics shared by Covenanteyes.com in their Article, "68% of divorce cases involved one party meeting a new lover over the Internet. 56% involved one party having “an obsessive interest in pornographic websites. 70% of wives of sex addicts could be diagnosed with PTSD."
And this is not just it, "Prolonged exposure to pornography leads to:
- Diminished trust between intimate couples.
- Belief that promiscuity is the natural state.
- Lack of attraction to family and child-raising."
So, do it but in moderation. Be sure, not to lose touch with reality. The goal is to lead a good Sex life.

Inspired from and Dedicated to Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee

The Millennial's Internet Crisis
It has been not so long ago that if you looked on the streets at evening time, you saw kids playing gully cricket or chatting up with what happened in the recent episode of shaktimaan or in their favourite cartoon. That was the time when kids learnt from the books or their elders or their peers in the society. They learnt through fat jokes, jibes, nicknames, etc. acts which weren’t glorified by or frowned upon but were simply done. There were no boundations of appearing to be very sophisticated among your friends and no need to show off what food you’re having, where you’re having and with whom you’re having.
But that all changed since the mid 2000’s, since the advent of the internet in the lives of the normal people. They were now exposed to the content that previously had been enabled only when you looked for them and not without atleast one person knowing about it. The lives changed. The most affected were the millennials who were at an age that marks a high curiosity rate on the learning curve. The millennials got introduced to the internet that connected them to the world, things like the social media such as Orkut, Facebook, etc. As they learned and grew, something terrible started happening.
They were being hooked to the internet, the attraction of having to express yourself to a person who is not only willing to listen to their silly notions but also shared them was too much to handle. They fell head over heels in love with the social media. Was this a good thing? I think not but that is still up for debate. Then something spectacular happened! The internet or the social media entered a new era where the governments realised how the misuse of internet can happen and how the internet is more prone to affecting the minds of the young population which are very impressionable. So they decided to restrict or regulate the content that was coming up on the internet. They started laying down cyber security laws as the use of computers and internet based OS and softwares found application in the government sector. As this progressed, internet usage boomed from dial up networks to cyber cafe’s to using internet services offered by Telecom companies to broadband connection, the behaviour of the millennials changed at an exponential rate.
But the impact this change had was not as pretty as it was appearing to be. While the cyber cafes were booming across the country, the youngsters were becoming more prone to problems and behavioural patters that were unheard of at that time in an average middle class household. This was a blow to the “Free internet/Liberal” brigade. The 'Generation X' parents were completely unequipped and unaware to even understand the issue, let alone address it or understand the root cause of this behaviour of their dependents. At that point of time, if you were to ask a parent who were undergoing this crisis that what was the most harrowing experience they have experienced in their lives, they will would have recounted the same without a second thought. Their kids, roughly between the age of 14-23 were lying, stealing and sneaking away to get a taste of the internet and social media. It became the new drug and the kids started giving up on books, comics and sports just to see that buffering sign on the screen which led to the message that xyz has become their new friend. This in turn led the way to online dating, pornography, cyber crimes, online stalking, obsession and whatnot. The constant exposure to
